What Is VAT Relief?

All products on our site are listed with 0% VAT and are eligible for zero-rated VAT unless stated otherwise.

What is VAT?
VAT (value added tax) is charged on most things that you buy in the UK it is often added to the price of goods without you even realising however, it actually makes up 20% of the overall price (for example if you bought a pair of trousers for £24, £4 of that would have been VAT and only £20 the trousers).

Am I entitled to VAT relief?

If you have a long-term illness or are disabled, you don't have to pay VAT on certain goods and services that you buy in the UK. Generally the equipment covered by this are things that will be of practical help to you because of your illness or disability.

If you are in any doubt as to whether you are eligible to receive goods or services zero-rated for VAT you can:

  • Call us on 0114 2315131,

  • Call HMRC National Advice Service on 0845 010 9000.

What counts as a long-term illness or disabled?

The most asked question we get is, do I have to be claiming disability money to get VAT relief? and the answer is no. you also do not need to be certified as disabled, however for VAT purposes, you have a long-term illness or are disabled if you meet any of the following conditions:

  • if you have a physical or mental impairment which has a long-term and substantial adverse effect upon your ability to carry out everyday activities.

  • if you have a condition that the medical profession treats as a chronic sickness, such as diabetes, arthritis, COPD etc etc

  • if you are terminally ill.

Example

So, you don't qualify if you are elderly but otherwise able-bodied, however you do qualify if you have arthritis that affects your ability to do everyday things.

Please also note that you don't have to physically buy the goods in person. If somebody buys the goods and services for you, then you will still not be charged VAT.
